Qcom was approached by Timeline Television Ltd to help design, deploy and manage the internal network and security for BT Sport’s broadcasting facility and studios in Stratford, East London. BT Sport was a new channel that had committed to showing Premier League football in August 2013.
There were a few challenges we faced from day one. Firstly, Timeline did not really know what they needed and secondly, we had six months before testing and the deadlines were non-negotiable. Another challenge was having to form and manage working relationships with many different contractors and vendors. We had to ensure everyone was able to deliver their part within the timescales set.
The timescales and scale of the project meant Timeline were having to rely on specialists to deliver the IT side of the project. We had several meetings with management from Timeline and BT Sport to define what was required. Once the scope was confirmed, we began the design process.
Once the design and bill-of-materials was complete, we began sourcing the solutions from vendors such as Cisco, Juniper & Fortinet. The design also included all the physical data cabling for the building, this comprised of over 100 kms of cable.
As the project was progressing, more requirements were added which meant that we also had to integrate them into the overall plan. One of the additional requirements was to set-up an internal IT helpdesk complete with case management and monitoring software. The helpdesk was to support in the region of 75 users.
A month before the go-live date, we began testing to ensure the network and security would perform under the expected loads. We also helped set-up a full staffed helpdesk. The end result was a high performance, secure and resilient network that helped BT Sport to deliver sports coverage from around the globe.
The project was completed successfully, within budget and on time.
Timeline and BT Sport have gone from strength to strength since 2013 and Qcom remain an important technical partner. Qcom continue to provide remote and onsite 3rd line support to the helpdesk.
Qcom continued to partner with Timeline to deliver additional projects, again, within tight deadlines.
